The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.
Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the option to challenge certain rulings made by the official, mirroring the practice currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.
A Recent Example
An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire watched a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
