Individuals who experienced abuse by Catholic clergy have expressed fresh optimism following their initial encounter with Pope Leo at the Holy See.

Gemma Hickey, who leads Ending Clergy Abuse, stated that the pontiff's decision to engage with them so soon in his papacy spoke volumes about his dedication to tackling the problem.

Worldwide Zero-Tolerance Policy Advocated

The group is advocating for a global strict approach that would defrock any priest who admits to or is found guilty of sexually abusing a child. This policy has already been adopted in the US.

The Pontiff acknowledged that there is "resistance in some parts of the world" to this initiative, according to Hickey.

"Everyone was practical when we acknowledged that there is pushback," they remarked.

Inherited Challenge

The current pontiff, who assumed the role in May, has taken on this longstanding problem that has plagued the Catholic Church for decades.

Previous efforts to address the problem included an unprecedented meeting on paedophilia within the Church and revisions to canon law to clearly outlaw abuse.

Personal Connection

For Hickey, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, the drive for global implementation of the policy is personal. The North American advocate revealed they were victimized by a priest who was subsequently moved between different parishes.

"Hopefully this will establish the direction for his leadership, because we want to collaborate with him," Hickey stated. "We have the same goal, we seek to end abuse by religious officials."

Significant Meeting

Multiple members of the coalition, which represents victims and supporters from more than 30 countries, engaged with the Pope in his Vatican office.

The meeting, originally scheduled for a brief period, extended to a full hour, during which the Pope "primarily heard to us," according to the representative.

The pontiff was described as "very understanding" when listening to the account of a female survivor victimized at a church-run institution for Indigenous children in North America.

Hickey added the Pope was "tender" about their personal experience and appeared "modest, funny, and approachable."

"Victims have long wanted a voice in discussions and I didn't feel like he was giving us lip service," they commented. "I felt like he was genuine, realistic, and receptive and eager to collaborate with us."

Church Regulations Changes

The organization is hoping that changes to church regulations will enable the adoption of the zero-tolerance policy worldwide.

They have consulted experts and gathered documents that they will submit to the pontiff.

"He appeared engaged in reviewing it," Hickey noted.

Accountability Highlighted

A recently released church-ordered document emphasized the "necessity of a streamlined protocol for the stepping down and/or removal of religious officials or staff in cases of abuse or failure to act."

The report also noted that survivors repeatedly stressed the "urgent need for church leaders and major superiors to be held accountable for negligence and cover-up."

Moving Forward

The representative revealed they told the Pope at the start of their discussion: "This is as much a challenge for him to engage in a conversation as it was for us."

Following the encounter, Hickey voiced hope for progress.

"We realise it's not something that's going to happen overnight, but at the end of the day, uniting and establishing a connection and continuing to build that relationship is a move in the right direction," Hickey stated.

Hickey added that they told with the pontiff: "Just because it's a difficult period, I feel like we can change how the story concludes - he valued that."
