Trump's Woke Warning Misses Europe's Real Threat: Technological Decline.

The recent US security policy document offers a misguided view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" agendas pose an grave threat to the continent's identity. However, this perspective rests on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The true danger facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Growth Gap Separating the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% increase for the European Union. Over this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, about 50% of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Question

This widening disparity stems from stronger efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology dominance is decidedly US-centric. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at more than $10bn, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This gap prompts a vital issue: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Experts widely agree it is largely a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of major factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population, is split among 27 different national systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to advance serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of major changes.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains significant advantages: skilled human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements could unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically increase economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. However, if it fails to take decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
