Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a significant awards ceremony approaches, one notices a demand for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles globally and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
