No fewer than 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in national projects. They were completed at an rapid rate, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an urgent halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been running in full compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
