This Supernatural Story
Soderbergh challenges his directorial skills in this clever paranormal narrative captured wholly from the viewpoint of a ghost. As a family featuring mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe occupies their fresh home, the lens – representing the ghost – shadows their actions. Chloe seems sensing the ghostly being, and it seems guarding her. However, the motive remains? The premise is enjoyable that avoids overstaying, featuring a surprise you might not see coming. This Self-Referential Film
Cage fully commits to his cult stardom via this autobiographical spoof. He portrays an egotistical film star named Nicolas Cage who takes on a million-dollar gig to appear at a festive event at a Mediterranean location for the rich Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Hired by government spies to investigate the alleged criminal, Cage's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” proves useful. Saturday 11 October, prime time, Channel 4
This Creepy Thriller
Derrickson's locked-room horror holds up well even without a follow-up. Located in 1970s Colorado, multiple kidnappings has left the local kids on edge. After Finney is kidnapped by the villain and imprisoned in a cellar, he anticipates a terrible outcome. But the non-functional line mounted nearby repeatedly calls, with ghostly voices offering help, as the intuitive nightmares from his sibling Gwen could save him. A genuinely scary movie. Saturday 11 October, late evening, Film4
The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the struggle between God and Mammon, the victory is clear for materialism in Michael Showalter's delightfully tacky biopic regarding the shamed religious broadcaster and her felon spouse. Garfield plays the venal Jim, who states early on, claiming divine approval for wealth. He and Tammy Faye set about monetising the nation's Christian beliefs. It's a riot of poor styling, overdone appearance and hypocrisy, yet Jessica Chastain manages to present the character in a likable light. Tuesday 14 October, 1.15am, the Film4 channel
